Facts about Walden University
- Walden University was founded by two teachers in 1970 as a way or working teachers to work on pursuing their doctorates. The initial idea was to gather students with faculty to discern each student’s respective dissertation topic. Then students would return home to work on their dissertation under the guidance of faculty members from a distance.
- Walden University is the alma mater of several well-known authors including Sharon T. Freeman (management), Nancy Appleton (nutrition and health), and Anne Smollin (education).
- Several high profile politicians and public servants have also attended Walden, including a member South Carolina House of Representatives, a senior executive of the NSA, and a Human Resource Agency’s Special Advisor to the Director of OPM for Diversity Strategy.

Walden University Online Learning Features
Walden University began offering it’s first online degree way back in 1995, making it one of the first universities offering degrees online. Over time, the university has used its massive amount of experience in providing online degrees to craft an innovative technologically-driven online experience. “Tempo Learning” — as Walden refers to it — enables students to pay for courses on a subscription basis and move more quickly through coursework they already have experience in. This allows students with past work, life, or university experience to translate their knowledge into credits. For working adults, this allows many students to cash in on their vocational knowledge, lowering time until degree and the overall program cost. Additional flexibility-enhancing components include the ability to transfer up to 75% of an undergraduate degree as well as the ability to enroll in a 2 week risk-free trial of coursework.
