The University of Massachusetts is a five-campus public university system and the only public research system in the state of Massachusetts. UMass Online is the online or distance education center for all campuses within the University of Massachusetts system. UMass Online was created in 2001 to meet the online educational needs of students, as well as to provide a central hub for the existing online degree programs offered through each of the UMass campuses. As such, all degrees through UMass Online come from the individual campus (i.e. Amherst, Lowell, Boston, Dartmouth, or the medical school) that runs the degree program rather than through UMass Online. UMass Online offers over 150 degree and certificate programs that include over 1,500 online courses spanning disciplines like liberal arts, education, business and management, nursing, public health, and information technology. UMass Online also offers a number of degree completion programs for students with some undergraduate coursework. Because UMass Online is the umbrella for all online programs through each of the 5 schools, online students get access to the same internationally recognized faculty, research level libraries, and the student and career services available at most public research university schools.

UMass Online, Online Learning Features
The UMass system has been a leader in online education for years. UMass brings to its online degree programs the same level of international recognition as its brick and mortar schools, as well as the same award winning faculty and research innovation. While UMass Online allows students to more easily fit coursework into their busy schedules and allows for flexibility in terms of location and travel, most online courses fit into the standard academic calendars with start dates in the fall, spring, and summer. Students also have options to take blended learning classes, which combine the flexibility of online coursework with the hands-on features of face-to-face classroom interactions. Many courses can transfer to other schools, depending on that school’s transfer policies, and students can take online classrooms offered from all of UMass 5 campuses.
